Richard G. “Dickie” Barela, Sr. passed away Sunday September 5, 2010. He was born October 30, 1944 to Paul and Cleo Leyba Barela in Raton. He was a emember of the U.M.W.A. where he worked in the mines for 30 years. He was a life tome member of the V.F.W. Dickie served in the army from 1964-1967. He did one tour of Vietnam where he earned the following medals/awards: the National Defense Service Medal, Expert Rifle-M-14 Vietnam Service Medal, Purple Heart, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. Anyone who knew him would hear one of his stories about guns or his travels. He loved hunting, camping, fishing, drawing, traveling and most of all he loved taking care of his family. Dickie Barela, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gene “Peppe” Barela, daughter, Stancie Lee, and step son, Michael Christie. He is survived by his wife, Beverlee of the home, sons: Gary Fresquez of Raton, Rick Barela and wife Bernadine of Dumas, TX and Richard G. Barela, Jr. and wife Michelle of Raton. Daughters: Michele Christie of Kent, WA, Jami Esquibel and Patti Young and husband Sam of Raton. Two sisters, Lucy Gonzales and Hazel Casarez and husband Al. He had 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be held Friday, September 10th at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick-St. Joseph’s Catholic Church followed by the Solemn Mass of the Resurrection. Rite of committal and interment will take place at Fairmont Cemetery. Funeral arrangements for Richard G. “Dickie” Barela, Sr. are under the direction of the Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home of Raton.
